Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a Weapon System Concept Development Engineer to join the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization team in Laurel, MD. The role focuses on concept development for missile and weapon systems, with opportunities to influence systems-level design and performance assessments.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Master's in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, or similar discipline.
  • Experience in at least one system/subsystem discipline (vehicle design, propulsion, aerodynamics, guidance, seekers, etc.).
  • Experience with numerical optimization, multidisciplinary design optimization, and uncertainty quantification or surrogate/metamodeling.
  • Ability to codify real-world constraints into mathematical models for optimization algorithms.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, and C++.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and solve problems related to aerospace vehicle design and kill chain engineering; conduct trade, optimization and sensitivity studies for concept development of next-gen missile/weapon systems.
  • Apply to tasks including missile design and performance, mission planning, fire control/weapon scheduling, defense applications, and early-stage hardware design.
  • Develop state-of-the-art models and simulations for conceptual design and performance estimation of US and adversary weapon systems.
  • Help guide technical programs with clear communication to sponsors and internal teams; identify potential future projects.
  • Apply state-of-the-art processes outside defense to augment sponsor offerings.
