Mathematics - Developmental Adjunct Pool

Summary

Provide the expertise and knowledge that support the college curriculum and programs. Establish courses following accepted higher education standards, teach students using a variety of effective methodologies and provide engagement and support activities that encourage student learning. The role of the Instructional Faculty encompasses teaching and learning, academic advising, professional development and institutional and community service. The incumbent will teach the maximum load of contact hours as indicated in the Faculty Guidelines each semester in area(s) of competency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teach a full load of mathematics classes each semester.

Work collaboratively with the Dean of Academic Services, Department Chair for Mathematics and other faculty members to provide quality instruction and enrichment opportunities.

Teaching

Demonstrate skill and knowledge in teaching the discipline. Continuously improve instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods. Develop and use a syllabus for each course within college, discipline, and departmental guidelines and submit one copy to the department chair. Plan and use a variety of teaching methods and materials that assist students in meeting course objectives and are appropriate for students with differing educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles. Evaluate students to measure progress toward achievement of stated course objectives and inform them of their progress in a timely manner. Keep accurate student records and submit related reports within requested timelines. Review, evaluate, and recommend student textbooks and learning materials. Teach courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs. Use equipment and facilities responsibly. Demonstrate competence and interest in the use of technology in the classroom and willingness to explore new instructional methodologies.

Academic Advising

Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community. Provide access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods. Offer advice and assistance regarding instructional or program-specific issues. Present information about academic fields, opportunities for further study, transfer options, employment opportunities, co‑ops, part‑time work, work‑study, and support services. Create and maintain a website dedicated to this information. Work with the Department Chair on appropriate academic advising activities as needed by the College and Department.

Professional Development

Establish annual objectives for professional growth in consultation with the department chair. Stay current on developments in the discipline. Learn and apply technologies that support student learning. Participate in the evaluation process for self, department, and college.

Institutional and Community Service

Participate in scheduled institutional service activities including opening week events, conference days, and commencement exercises. Serve on discipline or program committees. Attend department, college, and system meetings. Participate in college‑related activities such as student events, faculty selection, community education, recruitment of students, and special programs. Contribute to activities required to maintain program and college accreditation standards. Assist in formulating departmental objectives and goals and in establishing budget priorities. Review, evaluate, and revise program curricula to meet professional standards and state‑mandated guidelines.

Qualifications

Education: Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a field of study related to mathematics.

Experience: Minimum of one year of tutoring and/or teaching experience or five to ten years of related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to teach day or evening classes at multiple sites. Proficiency with computer usage and educational software including Blackboard Vista or similar. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Good organizational and planning skills. Sensitivity to students from diverse academic, socio‑economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities. Ability to inspire and motivate students in a learning‑centered environment. Self‑disciplined and able to manage responsibilities effectively.
