Job summary

Passaic County Community College seeks dedicated Math Learning Lab Peer Tutor/Mentor (PT) to support students in developmental and college-level mathematics, including Statistics, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. This is a part-time, hourly position in Paterson, NJ.

The Tutor/Mentor will foster conceptual understanding, mathematical confidence, and independent learning through compassionate guidance, with a focus on building positive rapport and inclusive teaching practices.

Qualifications

  • Current college student with a solid academic record (GPA 3.25+ or better).

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in Math topics (Developmental & College-level).

  • Attend tutor meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
  • Refer students to campus/resources as needed for support.
  • Reinforce study skills and time-management strategies.

The Math Learning Lab seeks dedicated Peer Tutors/ Mentors who believe in every student's ability to learn mathematics and are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Tutors provide academic support to students enrolled in developmental and college-level mathematics courses, including Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and other mathematics courses as needed. This is a part-time, hourly position.

Math Learning Lab tutors serve as facilitators of learning who believe in every student's ability to succeed. Through compassionate rigor, purposeful questioning, and appropriate scaffolding, tutors foster conceptual understanding, mathematical confidence, and independent learning.

This is a part-time, hourly position.

Example of Duties:

  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
  • Provide individual and/or group tutoring/mentoring sessions
  • Participate in Staff Meetings, tutor/mentor training, and professional development activities to continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed.
  • Provide subject-specific content to help students understand key concepts to improve academic performance.
  • Reinforce collegiate skills including time management, communication and networking, and study strategies.
  • Conduct check-in meetings with tutees/mentees and maintain regular outreach.
  • Assist in the development of skills necessary for students to succeed both personally and academically.
  • Uphold Program policies and procedures at all times.
  • Evaluate and document tutoring/mentoring sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Math Lab Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Current College Student
  • 3.25 GPA or higher/ A or B+ in the relevant subjects
  • Tutoring experience is preferred
  • Ability to engage with and build positive rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Genuine commitment to supporting first-generation, under-resourced, college students
  • Demonstrate professionalism, creativity, enthusiasm and encourage student success
  • Technology, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the subject area(s)

The completion of a background check will be required for the selected candidate.

Compensation: Compensation is determined by a variety of criteria, including but not limited to previous relevant experience, education level, and certifications. The hourly pay for this position begins at $16.

  • New Jersey Sick Leave: Earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked with a maximum of 40 hours of leave per benefit year. (Eligible to use after successful completion of probationary period.)
