Job description

As a Math Assessment Writer/Designer, you will be responsible for developing and reviewing assessment items for an Algebra 1 assessment designed to mirror a state end-of-course exam. Most of this work is item writing. Beyond the individual items, you will also help shape how the assessment fits together as a whole, so that its standards coverage, item types, and overall difficulty reflect the state assessment it is modeled on.

You will work collaboratively with other content creators and subject matter experts to ensure that all assessment items are accurate, rigorous, and aligned with the latest educational standards. Our first project is a single assessment, and there is potential for ongoing work across additional assessments, states, and courses.

This is a remote, independent contractor position that offers flexibility and the opportunity to work with a dynamic team of professionals.

What you'll do
Item writing
  • Create, review, and revise Algebra 1 assessment items across the full course, including linear equations and inequalities, systems, functions, exponents and exponential models, polynomials and factoring, quadratics, radicals, and statistics with bivariate data.
  • Write straightforward and easy-to-follow specifications of each assessment item, following a template.
  • Author real-world and modeling problems with authentic contexts, realistic numbers, and clean, solvable mathematics.
  • Verify mathematical accuracy, build each distractor around a plausible student error, and confirm that every item has one defensible correct answer.
  • Ensure that all assessment items are accurate, rigorous, and aligned with Common Core and state standards.
  • Study the target state assessment, including its released items and published blueprint, and identify what our assessment needs to match.
  • Recommend how the assessment should be put together as a whole: which standards it covers, how many items each standard gets, and how items are distributed across difficulty levels.
  • Recommend item types and formats that reflect those used on the state assessment, including technology-enhanced formats such as graphing, equation entry, and drag-and-drop.
  • Order and balance the items so the assessment reads as a coherent form rather than a list of questions.
  • Review the assembled assessment against the state model and flag gaps, redundancies, or mismatches in coverage and rigor.
What we're looking for

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of Common Core and state standards for secondary mathematics.
  • Experience in secondary mathematics teaching or secondary mathematics assessment development. Specific experience in Algebra 1 is preferred.
  • Familiarity with state end-of-course assessments in mathematics and how they are structured.
  • Excellent mathematical writing and editing skills, with an eye for precise, unambiguous problem statements.
  • Understanding of common student misconceptions in algebra and the ability to build distractors around them.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Familiarity with digital assessment tools and technology.
  • A passion for improving educational outcomes for students.
  • Experience with South Carolina mathematics standards or its End-of-Course Examination Program is preferred, though we welcome candidates with strong experience in other states.
