Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a passionate graduate intern to conduct state-of-the-art research on high-throughput characterization of materials. You will join a multidisciplinary team integrating materials science, testing, and data science to develop AI-guided manufacturing solutions for advanced materials.

The role involves planning experiments, operating advanced characterization tools, and contributing to data curation and dissemination.

Qualifications

• Earned bachelor's degree.
• Enrolled full-time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or graduating in spring).
• Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0.
• Able to work up to 40 hours per week during summer.
• U.S. citizenship required for security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Plan and perform experiments; install, repair, and maintain diagnostic tools; collect and analyze data to understand parameter effects on microstructure and tribological properties.
• Characterize materials using indentation, AFM, and scratch testing in controlled environments; operate glove boxes, vacuum chambers, cryogenic cooling, and high-temperature stages.
• Curate and organize large data sets for FAIR data sharing.
• Publish journal articles and present at conferences.
• Collaborate with Sandia groups to develop new research opportunities; work onsite.
