Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Year-Round R&D Graduate Intern for Advanced Thin Films & Processing, onsite in Albuquerque. The role involves assisting in synthesis of sputtered thin films and performing structural, electrical, and magnetic characterizations, including XRD, electron microscopy, conductivity, and magnetometry measurements.

The internship requires current full-time enrollment in a qualifying graduate program, earned bachelor’s degree, and U.S.

Qualifications

• Earned bachelor's degree.
• Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0.
• Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer.
• U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S.
• The successful candidate must be a college graduate student in good standing pursuing a degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering or a related field, with an academic record that meets Sandia National Laboratories requirements for student interns.
• Experience with material synthesis and/or characterization especially physical vapor deposition, x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and/or electrical transport measurements.
• The ability to work independently and self-sufficiently as part of a larger team with high reliability and attention to detail.
• Good oral and written communication skills and strong self-initiative and self-responsibility.
• Ability to contribute in a team environment; strong self-motivation and enthusiasm to acquire work experience in a materials research and characterization laboratory

Responsibilities

• Assist with the synthesis of sputtered thin films.
• Assist with structural, electrical, and magnetic material characterizations including x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, conductivity, and magnetometry measurements.
• Assist with material synthesis/characterization, data collection, data analysis, and the ability to maintain a safe laboratory working environment.
