About the Role

Job Summary:
The Materials Manager is responsible for overseeing the warehousing, distribution, and management of materials essential for the production of industrial goods. This role ensures the timely availability of the correct materials in the required quantities, aligning with customer demands and manufacturing schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inventory Management: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement strategies, methodologies, processes, and systems to optimize inventory levels.
- Monitor stock levels and demand to ensure timely material replenishment or ordering to support production plans and customer orders.
- Determine appropriate purchase quantities and delivery timelines based on material needs and communicate these to the procurement team.
- Conduct regular inventory audits and counts, such as cycle counting, to maintain accurate material availability data.
- Collaborate with warehouse teams and cross-functional partners to optimize material storage and location tracking systems.
- Identify and implement enhancements for material handling and storage efficiency.
- Production Support: Partner with production managers and planners to synchronize material requirements with production schedules.
- Ensure materials are readily available for use in the manufacturing process as needed.
- Track material consumption to prevent shortages or excess inventory.
- Cost Control: Manage material costs through effective sourcing strategies and inventory control practices.
- Track and report on material costs, offering recommendations for cost reduction initiatives.
- Identify areas of material waste and implement process improvements to minimize waste and maximize efficiency.
- Quality Assurance: Verify that all incoming and stored materials meet established quality standards and specifications.
- Collaborate with quality control teams to address any material defects or quality-related issues.
- Conduct periodic evaluations of suppliers to ensure consistent quality and reliability.
- Team Management: Lead and manage a team of material handlers, and shipping and receiving personnel.
- Provide training and development opportunities to enhance team member skills and performance.
- Establish clear performance expectations, monitor team performance, and implement necessary corrective actions.
- Continuous Improvement: Continuously evaluate and refine material management and procurement processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Stay informed about current industry trends and best practices in materials management and supply chain operations.
Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Management or a related field (preferred).
- Professional certifications such as CPIM or CSCP are advantageous.
- Experience implementing lean supply chain management methodologies is required.
Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in materials management within a manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple teams, processes, and material types.
- Proficiency in utilizing MRP/ERP systems and inventory management software.
- Experience with the application of Kanban and other pull-based inventory systems.
Skills:
- Comprehensive knowledge of materials management, inventory control principles, and procurement best practices.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively under pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
