Job summary

Westinghouse Electric Company is seeking a Materials Engineer in Columbia, SC, to support development of advanced materials and manufacturing processes such as Cr coated cladding. You will join a hybrid role reporting to the Materials and Fuel Rod Design Manager, working with national labs and universities.

Requires a 3+ year background in engineering with zirconium alloys and advanced characterization; proficiency in SolidWorks, Python and MATLAB is desired.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required with emphasis toward nuclear materials.
  • 3+ years of experience in materials engineering.
  • Experience with zirconium-based alloys and materials characterization techniques (SEM, EDS, EBSD, WDS, XRD, XPS, FIB, TEM).

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance and collaborate with national labs, universities and industry groups.
  • Support hands-on material testing programs (mechanical, corrosion, creep, high-temp oxidation).
  • Develop new lab capabilities for material characterization and train staff.
  • Work with customers and universities for collaborative development of fuel materials.
  • Analyze and provide data for licensing submittals for new fuel materials.

About the Role

As a Materials Engineer you will support development of advanced materials and manufacturing processes such as Cr coated cladding.

You will report to the Materials and Fuel Rod Design Manager. This is a hybrid role, located in Columbia, SC. Local candidates only.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to and collaborate with other entities such as national laboratories, universities, and industry groups. Bring engineering thoughtfulness to resolution of problems, requiring prior knowledge and literature review within given discipline.
  • Support hands‑on material testing programs in a test lab environment. Testing ranges from mechanical testing, autoclave corrosion testing, creep testing, high temperature oxidation, and materials/chemical characterization.
  • Develop new capabilities and methodologies in the laboratory for material characterization. Oversee and provide training to technician and engineering personnel.
  • Work with customers, national labs, and universities for collaborative development programs to develop advanced fuel materials.
  • Analyze and provide test data for supporting new fuel materials for licensing submittals.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience.
  • Chemical Engineering degree helpful.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required, with an emphasis toward nuclear materials.
  • Experience with zirconium-based alloys.
  • Analytical experience using advanced characterization techniques including SEM, EDS, EBDS, WDS, XRD, XPS, FIB, and TEM.
  • Experience with computation and data analysis software (including SolidWorks, Inventor, ThermoCalc, Python, Matlab, and Excel).

We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $85,200 to $106,500 per year.
