Job summary

Westinghouse Electric Co in Columbia, SC is looking for a Materials Engineer to advance advanced materials and manufacturing for CR coated cladding. The hybrid role combines remote/office work with local presence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with emphasis toward nuclear materials.
  • 3+ years of materials engineering experience.
  • Experience with zirconium-based alloys and material characterization.
  • Strong analytical skills and data analysis capability.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, Python, MATLAB and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance and collaborate with national labs and universities.
  • Resolve problems with literature review and engineering judgment.
  • Support hands-on material testing in a lab, including mechanical, creep, oxidation tests.
  • Develop new lab capabilities for materials characterization and train staff.
  • Work with customers and labs on collaborative programs for advanced fuel materials.
  • Analyze test data to support licensing submittals.

About The Role

As a Materials Engineer you will support development of advanced materials and manufacturing processes such as CR coated cladding. You will report to the Materials and Fuel Rod Design Manager. This is a hybrid role, located in Columbia, SC. Local candidates only.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to and collaborate with other entities such as national laboratories, universities, and industry groups
  • Bring engineering thoughtfulness to resolution of problems, requiring prior knowledge and literature review within given discipline
  • Support hands‑on material testing programs in a test lab environment, including mechanical testing, autoclave corrosion testing, creep testing, high‑temperature oxidation, and materials/chemical characterization
  • Develop new capabilities and methodologies in the laboratory for materials characterization and provide training to technicians and engineering personnel
  • Work with customers, national labs, and universities for collaborative development programs to develop advanced fuel materials
  • Analyze and provide test data for supporting new fuel materials for licensing submittals
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required, with an emphasis toward nuclear materials; a Chemical Engineering degree is helpful
  • Experience with zirconium‑based alloys
  • Analytical experience using advanced characterization techniques including SEM, EDS, EBDS, WDS, XRD, XPS, FIB, and TEM
  • Experience with computation and data analysis software (SolidWorks, Inventor, ThermoCalc, Python, MATLAB, and Excel)

We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $85,200 to $106,500 per year.
