Job summary

Geater Machining & Manufacturing, Co in Independence, IA, is seeking a Material Handler to receive, inspect, and distribute incoming material in a manufacturing setting.

You will operate a forklift, verify material quantities, and collaborate with purchasing and production to resolve shortages or overages. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, forklift certification, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.

Qualifications

  • Fork truck Certification required.

  • Operate and use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely.
  • Interpret written, oral, or schedule form instructions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload packages onto/from vehicles and prepare for production.
  • Examine material for conformance to specifications.
  • Communicate material shortages or overages with purchasing and supervisors.
  • Count, sort, and prepare bulk material for production.

Job description

The basic functions of the Material Handler are to receive, inspect, prepare and distribute incoming material.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Operate fork truck to convey materials within plant.
  • Compute, verify, and record amount of material received, required and distributed.
  • Load and unload packages onto/from vehicle, pallet, tray, rack and shelves and install/remove strapping, bracing, or padding used to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
  • Examine material prior to delivering to production departments to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Saw, shear, cut and count bulk material to prepare for production.
  • Empty scrap barrels.
  • Communicate with purchasing on material overages, shortages, and problems.
  • Communicate with machining working supervisors on material, which is overdue or short.

  • Fork truck Certification required.

  • Read and interpret documents such as blueprints, specifications, safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Calculate figures and formulas that pertain to the work area.
  • Problem-solve undefined expectations.
  • Computer literate.
  • Flexibility to work inside of a fast pace environment which may ask for quick change in product being produced.
  • Work well in a team environment, demonstrate good communication skills, and maintain a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Education and/or Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Six months to one year related experience and/or training.
Physical Demands Include:
  • Sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Use of fingers, hands and arms to handle, grip, and grasp objects, controls, parts, tools and to operate required equipment; and reach, push and pull with hands and arms.
  • Frequently lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Being able to see (20/25 vision with or without glasses) and hear (with mechanical assistance if necessary) sufficient to understand and comprehend individual one-on-one conversations.
Work Environment:

This person will work in a manufacturing environment which is temperature controlled. The person will be working near moving mechanical parts. This setting involves manufacturing equipment with others working in close proximity.
