Description

McClatchy Media is seeking a detail-oriented and results-driven Marketing Communications Specialist, Newsletters, who will be instrumental in executing newsletter strategies that engage and nurture non-subscriber audiences across our verticals and markets. Focused on driving meaningful audience connections, you’ll support the development and deployment of high-impact email communications that fuel engagement and revenue opportunities. This role sits at the intersection of content, audience development and CRM execution, playing a key part in elevating our non-subscriber communication strategy and supporting stakeholders across editorial, marketing and revenue teams.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between 65k and 80k annually. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography, and local wage and hours laws.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Become an expert in our messaging platforms and automation tools
  • Execute data-informed newsletter campaigns across targeted verticals, using performance insights and audience behavior to shape segmentation, content strategy and deployment. Own the end-to-end process including email build, QA, A/B testing, scheduling and reporting, ensuring each newsletter aligns with marketing goals and drives measurable engagement with non-subscriber audiences.
  • Assist with strategy and implementation of comprehensive marketing that delivers the needed volume to support each market’s core print, digital and developed products
  • Help to define business requirements for marketing automation and work with marketing counterparts to scope and implement these campaigns
  • Build automated, multi-touch nurture programs for several audiences across the unknown user lifecycle
  • Maintain the performance and health of marketing channels with regard to audience segmentation, list hygiene and deliverability
  • Monitor industry best practices. Integrate best practices to ensure optimal email results, improved deliverability and compliance around permission-based marketing, privacy and spam regulation (CAN/SPAM)
  • Work with marketing communications design and automation/orchestration managers to configure other ways to reach consumers outside of email including social media, on and off-site messaging, etc., to optimize newsletter list growth.
  • Work with the acquisition, retention and lifecycle teams, as well as other leaders, on their goals and consumer journey flow to achieve success across the department

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Understanding of event-based data model and how it relates to marketing automation
  • Experience designing and implementing A/B and multivariate tests
  • Experience building, growing and optimizing newsletter and recurring emails in a fast-paced environment fueled by data
  • Sufficient knowledge of HTML and CSS to be conversant with development teams
  • Excellent project management skills along with excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Excellent team player; proven ability to apply innovative ideas and critical thinking to projects and the organization's opportunities and able to work with various teams: creative, IT, analytics, etc.
  • Able to anticipate needs, innovate and flourish in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Proficient with G-Suite, CEP and data reporting tools. Amplitude and Braze a plus
  • Comfortable presenting data/findings to leadership

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • BA or BS Degree from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • 1-3 years in a similar CRM / marketing role, including experience with lifecycle email
  • Deep understanding of major marketing channels including social (Facebook, Instagram), messaging platforms (Braze or Adobe Campaign preferred), analytics tools (Google or Amplitude preferred) and lifecycle marketing.
