The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Maritime Systems Intern to apply engineering expertise to protect and advance U.S. naval maritime capabilities.

You will help design, test, and enhance systems supporting SURTASS programs in a winter internship beginning January 2027. qualifications include pursuing a BS in Marine Engineering, ME, EE, mathematics, or physics, with SURTASS experience and a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Qualifications

  • Enrollment for 8 week internship starting January 2027.
  • Pursuing a BS in Marine Engineering, ME, EE, mathematics, physics or equivalent.
  • College coursework in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related field.
  • Operational, design, or analysis experience with the SURTASS system.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work across teams.
  • Ability to obtain Secret security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the technical appropriateness of system modernization initiatives and propose alternatives.
  • Review platform development against Coast Guard and shipping standards for Navy readiness.
  • Research and experiment with next‑generation analysis capabilities.
  • Present analysis and engineering assessments to peer groups.
