Job description

Major Project Accountant | Salary Range: $32.40 - $47.76 / hourly; $67,651 - $99,722 / annually

Location: St. Paul, MN

This position may have the flexibility to telework, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office as determined by policy and discussion with their supervisor.

Our Major Project Accountant position oversees all major transportation projects costing $100 million or more and serves as the agency’s expert in the financial and accounting requirements of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) federal aid program. It provides leadership, technical guidance, and coordination to project staff to ensure proper financial management and compliance with federal and state regulations.

The role monitors and manages financial responsibilities tied to major projects, including partnerships and revenue agreements; supports and advises MnDOT staff on the use of statewide financial systems (SWIFT); and recommends improvements to financial procedures and business practices. The position also leads corrective actions to maintain agency compliance and serves as a key resource for major project financial oversight across MnDOT.

Here are the Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of advanced professional experience that demonstrate:

  • Knowledge and application of federal laws, regulations, and financial requirements such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) federal aid programs.
  • Experience monitoring project financials, reviewing cost documentation, and ensuring compliance.
  • Financial reporting experience to analyze and prepare reports, forecast, and/or provide risks analysis.
  • Experience serving as a strategic partner to stakeholders.

A Master’s or Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or finance may substitute for six months of advanced professional experience.
