The Town of Cary is currently recruiting for a Maintenance Supervisor to support our Western Wake Regional Water Reclamation Facility(WWRWRF), the town’s newest and largest facility, featuring 18 MGD of advanced Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) capacity and a Thermal Biosolids Dryer Facility.

This key leadership role is responsible for ensuring reliable plant operation, equipment performance, and full compliance with regulatory requirements.

Work is performed under general supervision of the WWRWRF Manager in coordination with the Facility Operations and Laboratory divisions. This position exercises supervision over seven personnel. Applicant must display strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Position is frequently on call and serves as the Backup ORC. Applicant must be skilled in the use of technology with the ability to type and communicate in a professional manner.

Water Reclamation Facility positions are designated as critical positions and are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to maintain equipment and/or assist in any capacity necessary to continue Town operations.



Anticipated Hiring Range: $78,478- $93,828-- Highly qualified candidates with extensive relevant experience may be considered for a salary above this range.

• Lead and supervise a team of maintenance personnel, including performance management, hiring, training, and scheduling.
• Maintain strong team communication, including leading regular staff briefings/meetings, task assignments, and performance tracking for day-to-day and project work.
• Develop, implement, and revise a comprehensive maintenance strategy for predictive, preventive, and corrective tasks across all WRF assets.
• Assist in the development of the annual maintenance budget for parts, tools, and materials inventory.
• Manage procurement of maintenance-related assets, inventory, repair parts, and vendor services using the Oracle ERP system, ensuring timely and cost-effective purchasing in alignment with maintenance/operational needs and company policies.

• Administer and maintain the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and the plant-wide asset management program.
• Attend and contribute to weekly supervisor meetings; provide regular updates to management on program status and key performance indicators.
• Oversee maintenance and calibration of all process equipment, including biosolids systems, SCADA, UV disinfection, reclaim water pump stations, odor control systems, and instrumentation.
• Serve as the SCADA point of contact, including PLC/HMI troubleshooting and contractor coordination.
• Supervise and coordinate major equipment overhauls, new equipment installations, and facility upgrades.
• Maintain inventories of tools, parts, and supplies; manage warranties, vendor contracts, and equipment life-cycle planning.
• Conduct stormwater inspections.
• Ensure NFPA 70E compliance and oversee electrical safety inspections and maintenance.
• Monitor maintenance KPIs and report to management regularly; participate in budget preparation and procurement planning.
• Ensure safe work practices and regulatory compliance, lead safety initiatives for maintenance operations.
• Collaborate closely with the Operations and Laboratory programs to ensure seamless integration of maintenance activities.
• Provide on-call support and act as Backup Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) as needed.

Comprehensive knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of wastewater treatment equipment; comprehensive knowledge of installing, maintaining, and repairing large electrical, plumbing, pumping, instrumentation, SCADA, and mechanical systems; comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; knowledge of Advanced BNR treatment, UV disinfection, wastewater treatment chemicals, reclaim distribution, reclaim storage tanks and their components, and biosolids residuals management; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; thorough knowledge of electrical and building code requirements; general knowledge of computer operations; ability to utilize a maintenance software system; ability to determine improper operation of wastewater pumping and treatment equipment, and to take proper remedial action; ability to comprehend and follow complex oral and written directions; ability to supervise the work of skilled maintenance technicians; ability to work alongside maintenance staff on repair projects under adverse conditions; ability to diagnose problems and resolve issues in a timely fashion; ability to handle multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities; possess excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills; ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.

Physical Requirements

Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, loud noise, and unpleasant surroundings. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders and accessing tight spaces. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, operate computers and tablets, and make repairs. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in industrial or utility maintenance, with at least two (3) years in a supervisory role.
• Minimum three (3) years of maintenance experience in a water or wastewater facility.
• Minimum Grade I Wastewater Operator Certification or ability to obtain within first 12 month of employment.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email communication, and typing.
• Must reside within 50 miles or 1-hour drive of the WWRWRF or be willing to relocate.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical technology, Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, or related field.
• Grade IV Wastewater Operator Certification (or equivalent).
• Experience supervising contractors and managing capital/operating budgets.
• Knowledge of thermal biosolids drying, NFPA 70E, and environmental regulations.
• Experience in stormwater management and advanced SCADA systems.
