Job summary

University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking a Maintenance Lead for the UO Building Systems Maintenance-1004 team. The role fixes, maintains, and oversees campus facilities and equipment, providing leadership, planning, and technical direction.

You will coordinate daily work, mentor staff, and ensure safety and quality while supporting project planning and budget considerations. Weekend on-call rotation participation is required.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent with several years in facility maintenance.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance, safety standards, and basic building systems.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and mentoring to staff.

Responsibilities

As a Maintenance Lead, you will
  • Coordinate, prioritize, assign, and monitor daily work activities, work orders, service requests, schedules, and resources to support timely and effective completion of work.
  • Provide technical guidance and work direction to employees, monitor work quality and recurring concerns, and communicate significant issues and recommendations to leadership.
  • Support project development, planning, coordination, and execution, confirm scope, schedule, and budget requirements, and ensure project changes and closeout documentation are completed.
  • Coordinate work activities and schedules with various stakeholders and serve as a departmental liaison for general maintenance.
  • Ensure work complies with applicable safety requirements, codes, manufacturer guidance, University and departmental standards, and established procedures.
  • Evaluate recurring issues, facility and equipment conditions, preventive maintenance needs, and work practices and provide recommendations to improve reliability, consistency, safety, and service delivery.
  • Generate required activity, outage, and work coordination notifications and maintain accurate work orders and operational documentation.
  • Train, mentor, and provide technical instruction and feedback to staff and students, including reviewing completed work for quality, completeness, and compliance.
  • Perform general, corrective, and preventive maintenance on campus facilities, equipment, building components, and related systems.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and assess facility and equipment conditions to identify maintenance needs, operational deficiencies, safety concerns, and appropriate corrective actions.
  • Prepare estimates for repairs, replacements, upgrades, and project work.
  • Support leadership and contribute to departmental goals, standards, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Respond to urgent requests and campus emergencies and participate in scheduled weekend and after hours on call rotations.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • High school or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience, education, or a combination of both in facility maintenance, building systems, skilled trades, or comparable work.
  • 2+ years of troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining facility equipment, building components, or related systems.
  • 1+ years providing work direction, technical guidance, training, or mentoring to others.
  • Advanced knowledge of general maintenance operations, preventive maintenance practices, repair methods, minor construction activities, and related facilities operations.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements, codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Ability to interpret work orders, estimates, plans, specifications, technical documentation, and related information.
  • Proficient in the operation of applicable tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting, diagnosing, evaluating, and resolving technical or operational issues.
  • Familiar with project planning principles, such as scope, schedule, budget, materials, and technical requirements.
  • Skilled in providing technical guidance, training, mentoring, and verifying work performed by others.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate work orders, estimates, technical records, and related documentation using relevant software and electronic systems.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. and work from ladders and/or aerial equipment.
  • Available by cell phone to assist with campus emergencies and participate in regular weekend and after-hours on-call rotations.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and eligible to drive on University business.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in electrical technology, industrial technology, facilities maintenance, construction technology, electronics technology, or other related field of study.
  • Experience coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance activities across multiple facilities or building systems.
  • Experience preparing estimates, material requirements, and scopes of work.
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system to plan, track, and evaluate maintenance work.
  • Proficient utilizing work order systems, work tracking, project coordination, and preparing documentation.
  • Knowledge of University operational processes, budgeting practices, and/or institutional policies.
