OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Perform complex technical tasks associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of various Fire Alarm systems. This responsibility of this position is to provide supervision to those individuals inspecting, testing, troubleshooting and repairing the fire alarm systems. Provides overall management of the various fire alarm systems and associated equipment and devices.

This position has responsibility for fire alarm systems at the Hospital, Clinic, Ambulatory Offsite and Research buildings.

WORK PERFORMED

  • Must have a good understanding of all applicable fire alarm compliance; local, state, and national codes such as NFPA 70 and NFPA 72. General understanding of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Fire alarm / system requirements of The Joint Commission
  • Responsibility for the Supervision of the electronic technicians and safety technicians assigned to the fire alarm systems shop.
  • Provides constructive feedback to direct reports on a regular basis.
  • Prepares annual performance evaluations for assigned direct reports.
  • Conducts meetings with staff members routinely to discuss shop safety, compliance / code updates, reviews workload, preventative maintenance and testing schedules. Meets with staff regularly 1 : 1 to discuss performance and review of annual evaluations.
  • Participates in recruitment, reviews applications and resumes, conducts interviews and the hiring of new employees.
  • Ability to perform verbal, written, and termination disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Establishing schedules for routine and after-hours work as well as on-call schedules to provide optimum fire alarm coverage.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and maintenance / repair records to ensure compliance. Responsible for the required compliance and documentation for local, state and national agencies including The Joint Commission for all fire alarm equipment and systems.
  • Advise management of general condition of equipment and systems and any unusual problems or concerns that may arise; make recommendations for improvements and upgrades for budget planning; compile and present data to support recommendations.
  • Advise management of additional staffing needs and the use of outside vendors in order to properly maintain and meet the compliance requirements of the fire alarm systems
  • Perform specialized technical tasks including; inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of various fire alarm systems.
  • Consult with equipment manufacturers for technical assistance; contact manufacturer for warranty service or service beyond warranty if circumstances dictate.
  • Coordination and Management of outside vendors to make necessary repairs and complete routine maintenance on fire alarm including all associated system panels, devices and components
  • Research Manufacture sites, equipment manuals and online resources to obtain required replacement parts. Work with vendors to acquire pricing and complete purchase requisitions for parts and materials.
  • Works closely with various engineers, project managers, contractors and supervisors to assure all fire alarm systems are selected and installed appropriately. Assures that all fire alarm installations and testing meets the necessary compliance requirements. Provides feedback on design standards and project specifications.
  • Provide technical assistance, instruction, training and consultation to other staff members for the resolution of special problems.
  • Provides training for other E&O staff members on the locations, routine maintenance, testing and minor repairs of the fire alarm systems

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AT THIS LEVEL

Education / Training :

  • Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts.
  • State of NC contractor's license in a specific trade may be required or preferred.
  • NICET Certified for Fire Alarm Systems and Certification for Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems. Must have the certifications or the ability to test and pass the required exams within 24-months of hire.
  • Associate degree in Facility Maintenance, Electronics, Electrical, or another related field is desirable.

Experience :

  • Minimum of four years’ maintenance, troubleshooting and repair experience related to Fire Alarm systems or four years of trades experience with at least one year related experience.
  • OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE.
  • Valid N.C. Driver's license is required.

Skills :

  • Strong Customer Service Skills, ability to work well with others in a diverse setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, managers and administration.
  • Ability to communicate compliance documentation and processes with a local authority inspector and / or a Joint Commission Surveyor.
  • Profound knowledge of how the various types of fire alarm equipment, devices and overall systems.
  • Strong ability to read and comprehend wiring diagrams and to follow manuals on operation and installation to successful tasks. Ability to read and understand building drawings.
  • Exceptional ability to work independently without direct supervision and take responsibility for the repair of assigned equipment
  • Strong ability to prioritize assigned tasks for increased job delivery
  • Ability to work in a team setting with other maintenance workers also with staff members of other departments and assist as needed to make necessary repairs to get equipment operational as quickly as possible.
  • Willing to work after-hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • This position will be subject to call-in after hours as necessary.
  • Computer skills such as online search, Microsoft word, excel and outlook are required.
  • Ability to use a smart phone and computer maintenance programs to complete Preventative and Corrective Maintenance on a CMMS system.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

Six to eight years of experience required either in a specific field or in general building maintenance and repair; supervisory skills and experience required.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE.
