Job summary

United Performance Metals in Wallingford, CT is seeking an experienced production operator to set up and run rolling mill, winder, annealing furnace, and slitter lines. You will perform precision inspections, document production data in ERP, and ensure materials meet quality and packaging specs.

Ideal candidates have basic math and measuring-tool skills, can follow detailed instructions, and work safely with heavy equipment in a team environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience with precision measuring tools is preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions and travelers.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect for defects and ensure packaging and coil condition meet specs.
  • Support safety, housekeeping, and basic preventive maintenance.

Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and monitor rolling mill, winder, annealing furnace, and slitter equipment according to work instructions, customer specifications, and production schedules.
  • Perform tolerance checks and in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Load, unload, stage, and move coils, raw materials, and finished goods using approved material-handling equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, or hand trucks.
  • Enter production, inventory, quality, and process information into the ERP system or required production documentation.
  • Inspect material for visible defects, surface condition, dimensional accuracy, coil condition, and packaging requirements.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting, equipment checks, light maintenance, and housekeeping to support safe and efficient production.
  • Follow all safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, quality standards, and company policies.
  • Communicate equipment issues, material concerns, and production delays to supervisors, maintenance, and quality personnel.
  • Assist with training, cross-training, and continuous improvement activities as needed.
  • Support the shipping and receiving department as needed, including assisting with staging, packaging, labeling, inventory movement, loading and unloading materials, and preparing customer or internal shipments in accordance with company procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production, warehouse and plant operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous machine operation or manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience operating or supporting rolling mill, slitting, winding, annealing, CNC, or similar metal-processing equipment is a plus.
  • Ability to accurately use micrometers, calipers, gauges, and shop math to verify tolerances.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to follow detailed work instructions, travelers, job orders, and safety procedures.
  • Basic computer skills required, including the ability to enter data into production or ERP systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a production environment.
  • Forklift, overhead crane, or material-handling experience preferred; training may be provided.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive tasks during the shift.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or move materials within company safety guidelines.
  • Comfortable working around industrial production equipment, moving machinery, metal coils, furnaces, and material-handling equipment.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment and follow all plant safety rules.
  • Ability to work scheduled shift hours, overtime, and weekends as business needs require.
