Job summary

United Performance Metals, a Wallingford, CT facility, is seeking a production operator to set up and operate rolling mill, winding, annealing, and slitting equipment while ensuring quality and on-time production in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires basic math and measurement skills, ability to use micrometers/calipers, and ERP data entry, with related experience in metal processing preferred. Training and safety procedures are emphasized to maintain a safe work environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in machine operation or manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience with rolling mill, slitting, winding, annealing, CNC or similar metal-processing equipment is a plus.
  • Ability to use micrometers, calipers, gauges to verify tolerances.
  • Basic computer skills and data entry into ERP systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Forklift/overhead crane experience preferred; training may be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and monitor rolling mill, winder, annealing furnace, and slitter equipment according to work instructions, customer specifications, and production schedules.
  • Perform tolerance checks and in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Load, unload, stage, and move coils, raw materials, and finished goods using approved material-handling equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, or hand trucks.
  • Enter production, inventory, quality, and process information into the ERP system or required production documentation.
  • Inspect material for visible defects, surface condition, dimensional accuracy, coil condition, and packaging requirements.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting, equipment checks, light maintenance, and housekeeping to support safe and efficient production.
  • Follow all safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, quality standards, and company policies.
  • Communicate equipment issues, material concerns, and production delays to supervisors, maintenance, and quality personnel.
  • Assist with training, cross-training, and continuous improvement activities as needed.
  • Support the shipping and receiving department as needed, including assisting with staging, packaging, labeling, inventory movement, loading and unloading materials, and preparing customer or internal shipments in accordance with company procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production, warehouse and plant operations.

Description

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive tasks during the shift.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or move materials within company safety guidelines.
  • Comfortable working around industrial production equipment, moving machinery, metal coils, furnaces, and material-handling equipment.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment and follow all plant safety rules.
  • Ability to work scheduled shift hours, overtime, and weekends as business needs require.
