Job description

LVT - SA Specialty Services- Orthopedics

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine teaching hospital is seeking a licensed veterinary technician to join our Orthopedics service. The LVT will work with small animal patients in the hospital for both emergent and scheduled care, providing advanced diagnostic imaging, pre‑, peri‑, and post‑operative support, anesthesia monitoring, and physiotherapy. The role includes supervising students and ensuring quality patient care and client communication.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technician program and successful VTNE score.
  • License as a Veterinary Technician in the State of Georgia (or ability to transfer licensure from another applicable state) within 6 months of employment.
  • Experience working within an orthopedic area of a veterinary hospital or private specialty clinic.
  • Strong skills in diagnostic imaging (radiography, CT), phlebotomy, catheterization, drug dosage calculations, and anesthesia monitoring.
  • Ability to handle animals calmly, work under stress, and perform physical restraint safely.
  • Proficiency in manual dexterity for handling delicate equipment and large objects, and willingness to mentor staff and students.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide input during patient rounds and manage patient receiving schedules.
  • Perform technical tasks: phlebotomy, cystocentesis, injections, IV fluid administration, and specimen collection.
  • Assist with radiology imaging, anesthesia communication, and surgical case coordination.
  • Administer sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetics; calculate dosages, reconstitute drugs, and monitor patients during and after surgery.
  • Prepare and care for pre‑ and post‑surgical patients—clipping, bandaging, casting, wound care, and pain management.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, track therapeutic outcomes, and communicate with clients.
  • Instructions and supervision of students in clinical techniques.
Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, sit, stoop, bend, and walk on hard floors for intermittent periods.
  • Use manual dexterity to work with small instruments and large equipment.
  • Wear protective gear (mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, goggles).
  • Work long periods with arms extended.
