Job summary

The University of Georgia is seeking a Licensed Veterinary Technician – Anesthesia to support veterinarians in delivering high‑quality care and client education. The LVT will assist with anesthetic management across diverse procedures, teach catheter placement and nerve blocks, and ensure meticulous anesthesia records and equipment readiness.

Responsibilities include after‑hours duty on a rotating basis, stock maintenance for crash carts and ORs, and compliance with controlled substance handling

Qualifications

• Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate.
• Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Georgia.
• Preferred: Experience in a surgery-based hospital setting.

• Assist senior veterinary and veterinary technician students with anesthetic management for a variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures.
• Use anesthetic and pain-management agents.
• Perform and teach catheter placement, regional anesthetic nerve blocks, and intubation skills.
• Ensure successful recovery of post-anesthesia patients.
• Accurately maintain controlled drug logs and anesthesia patient records.
• Appropriate and legal handling of controlled substances.
• Maintain and stock anesthesia equipment and prep areas.

Job description

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Licensed Veterinary Technician – Anesthesia is to support veterinarians in ensuring quality veterinary care, advocating for pets, and educating clients. The LVT assists senior veterinary personnel with anesthetic management for a variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures, performing and teaching catheter placement, regional anesthetic nerve blocks, and intubation skills in a variety of species. Responsibilities include accurate maintenance of controlled drug logs and anesthesia patient records, maintenance of anesthesia‑related equipment, and stocking and maintenance of assigned crash carts.

Qualifications

• Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or professional certificate.
• Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Georgia.
• Preferred: Experience in a surgery‑based hospital setting.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

• Work in a fast‑paced environment while demonstrating excellent customer service and confidentiality.
• Knowledge of capnography, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure management for anesthetized patients in large and small animals.
• Basic knowledge of the pharmacological effects of anesthetic and pain‑management agents.
• Performing and teaching competent catheter placement, regional anesthetic nerve blocks, and intubation skills.

Physical Demands

• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, sit, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently on hard floor surfaces.
• Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large, heavy objects.
• Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, and safety goggles.
• Work for long periods with arms extended.

Duties / Responsibilities

• Assist senior veterinary and veterinary technician students with anesthetic management for a variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures.
• Use anesthetic and pain‑management agents.
• Perform and teach catheter placement, regional anesthetic nerve blocks, and intubation skills.
• Ensure successful recovery of post‑anesthesia patients.
• Accurately maintain controlled drug logs and anesthesia patient records.
• Appropriate and legal handling of controlled substances.
• Ensure proper charges for anesthesia cases, and submit and check lab work and imaging results through the hospital computer system.
• Adhere to emergency/after‑hours duty on a rotating basis.
• Collect blood, urine, and tissue samples; perform routine laboratory test procedures.
• Conduct radiology including settings, positioning, processing, and safety.
• Administer and apply treatments, drugs, fluids, and immunological agents via oral, parenteral, and injectable routes.
• Maintain and care for anesthesia‑related equipment; stock, clean, and maintain anesthesia prep area, crash carts, and ORs.
