Job summary

Good Wood Nashville is seeking an Operations Manager to run the day-to-day warehouse, inventory, fulfillment, and logistics. You’ll own the warehouse, yard, scheduling, and crew, while collaborating with the owner on purchasing and growth decisions.

You’ll be on the floor, not behind a desk, tackling shipping challenges and slab selections with designers. The role requires 4+ years in operations, forklift certification, strong inventory systems, and a proven ability to lead a small team.

Operations Manager

About Good Wood Nashville

Since 2012, Good Wood Nashville has been Nashville's one-stop wood shop — a locally owned lumber store supplying builders, designers, contractors, and DIYers with dimensional lumber, reclaimed hardwood flooring, live-edge slabs, mantels, beams and beam wrap, reclaimed barnwood, hard-to-find exotics, Lunawood, and Festool tools. We operate a 15,000 square foot warehouse and showroom 1.5 miles from downtown, and ship nationwide.

We're a small, hands-on team that knows every board in the building. We're looking for an Operations Manager to run the day-to-day so the business can keep growing without losing what makes it work.

The Role

This is the person who makes the place run. You'll own inventory, the warehouse and yard, fulfillment and freight, scheduling, and the crew — everything between a customer's order and a satisfied customer. You'll work alongside the owner on purchasing and growth decisions, and you'll be on the floor, not behind a desk.

If you like solving a shipping problem at 8 a.m., walking a designer through a slab selection at 11, and rebuilding the racking plan in the afternoon, this is your job.

What You'll Own

Inventory and purchasing

• Maintain accurate inventory across lumber, flooring, slabs, mantels, beams, tools, and finishes — including board-foot tracking and slab-by-slab records
• Manage reorder points, set stocking levels, and flag slow movers
• Place and track purchase orders; manage vendor and mill relationships (Lunawood, Festool, EcoPoxy, General Finishes, Starbond, regional mills and sawyers)
• Coordinate incoming loads, drying and milling schedules, and reclaimed material sourcing
• Run periodic physical counts and reconcile against the system

Warehouse and yard

• Own warehouse layout, racking, staging, and flow so material is findable and sellable
• Oversee receiving, inspection, grading, and put-away
• Keep equipment (forklifts, sawmill, shop tools, delivery vehicles) maintained and serviced
• Own housekeeping standards for the warehouse and showroom

Fulfillment and logistics

• Manage order flow from POS and e-commerce through pick, pack, and delivery
• Coordinate local delivery routes and crews
• Handle national shipping: crating, packaging standards, LTL and freight quoting, carrier relationships, claims
• Manage will-call and job-site drops, including the timing that keeps builders happy

Projects and installation

• Schedule and coordinate flooring, mantel, and beam installs — crews, materials, sequencing, and job-site logistics
• Serve as the operational point of contact for builders, contractors, and designers on active projects
• Track project costs, material usage, and waste

Team

• Supervise, schedule, and develop the warehouse and lumber store team
• Hire and onboard; build training so people can cover for each other
• Set daily priorities and hold the standard on quality and follow-through

Safety and compliance

• Own safety practices, forklift certification and training, PPE, and incident reporting
• Maintain OSHA-aligned procedures for equipment, dust, and material handling
• Keep vehicle and equipment records current

Systems and reporting

• Improve the systems — inventory, order tracking, scheduling, documentation — and actually get the team using them
• Report to the owner on inventory position, order status, margin, shrink, and operational costs
• Identify where we're losing time, material, or money, and fix it

What We're Looking For

Required

• 4+ years in operations, warehouse, distribution, or building-materials management, including at least 2 years supervising people
• Working knowledge of lumber, millwork, flooring, or building materials — you can talk species, grade, thickness, and moisture content without a cheat sheet
• Forklift experience (certification required; we can certify the right candidate)
• Strong command of inventory systems and spreadsheets; comfortable learning new software
• Track record of running a schedule and hitting commitments with a small crew
• Clear, direct communicator with customers, crews, and vendors
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record

Preferred

• Experience with specialty or reclaimed wood, live-edge slabs, or custom fabrication
• Sawmill experience (Wood-Mizer or similar)
• Freight and LTL shipping experience, including crating oversized materials
• Background coordinating installation crews or subcontractors

  Familiarity with e-commerce fulfillment

  • Existing relationships in the Nashville builder, contractor, or design community
  • Experience with builder's lumber packs/framing packs preferred.

  Physical requirements

  • Regularly lift and maneuver material up to 75 lbs, and heavier loads with equipment or help
  • On your feet most of the day in a warehouse environment with variable temperatures, dust, and noise
  • Comfortable working around forklifts, saws, and heavy material

  Schedule

  Monday–Friday, with occasional Saturdays. Store hours plus the time it takes to open and close well.

  Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range:$80,000 to $100,000, based on experience
  • Performance bonus based on profitability of the company.
