Job summary

IES Communications is seeking a Technician II - Structured Cabling in Tempe to lead small teams of installers and perform advanced cabling tasks. The role requires coordinating daily workload while ensuring safety and quality standards are met.

Pay ranges from USD 29.00 to USD 30.00 per hour, with opportunities to supervise crew and oversee project timelines. Prior fiber optic experience is recommended, along with the ability to read blueprints and complete paperwork accurately.

Job Summary

Fiber optic and troubleshooting experience recommended.

The Technician II - Structured Cabling must be able to perform the technical responsibilities of a Cable Installer and function as a lead member of a technical team. The Technician II - Structured Cabling will coordinate small groups of installers in the performance of daily workload, including adherence to company safety and quality standards.

Pay: Minimum USD $29.00/hr, Maximum USD $30.00/hr.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install a work area outlet for floor or wall (terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount face plates and surface mount boxes correctly, adhere to IES COMMERCIAL labeling standards).
  • Build closets (mount and install backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware). Install grounding for racks, equipment and cable as required.
  • Complete all IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
  • Perform testing: continuity test on horizontal and riser cable, use volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable.
  • Identify active voice or data circuits.
  • Assume responsibility for effective performance of crew and provide necessary training, coordinate personnel and timeline to complete project.
  • Fully complete all IES Communications paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers and others as required).
  • Adhere to and participate in all company, customer and industry quality and safety standards and regulations.
Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Work at heights, on a ladder and in confined spaces; lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Endure long periods of standing, walking, or working in inclement weather; sufficient strength and agility to lift and move heavy objects.
  • See and distinguish colors, read small print, hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
  • Travel within branch territory and/or regional territory as needed.
  • Maintain regular attendance and have adequate transportation to get to the job site.
Tools
  • Screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips (with belt sheath), pliers (needle‑nose and channel locks), hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight and gloves.
  • Trade tools: punch tool with 110 block and 66 block blade, 6/8 position combo crimp tool.
Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements

Must possess at least a high school diploma or GED equivalency. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in telecommunications or a related technical field and demonstrate the ability to supervise others. Must be proficient with the listed tools, able to interpret blueprints and other project documents, including specifications, reporting and quality requirements. Must know universal communications color codes. Must meet company minimum driving standards.

Minimum Experience and Licensing

Minimum experience: 4–6 years. License required. High school diploma required; no higher education is a minimum requirement.
