Job summary

HP IQ, HP’s AI innovation lab in San Francisco, seeks a Software Engineering Intern on the Systems team. You will work on low-level software near the hardware, exploring how complex systems operate and optimizing them for intelligent experiences across products.

You’ll collaborate across firmware, electrical engineering, and software teams to diagnose bottlenecks, improve memory usage, and contribute to cross-layer stack work while owning a technical project end-to-end.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in a technical field related to computing.
• Proficient in C and/or C++ programming.
• Strong fundamentals in data structures and algorithms.
• Familiar with memory management, OS concepts, concurrency, and performance optimization.
• Experience building or debugging complex software via coursework, internships, or projects.
• Interest in understanding software at a deep systems level near hardware.
• Ability to break down complex problems and communicate approaches clearly.

Responsibilities

• Build and optimize low-level systems software close to the hardware.
• Investigate bottlenecks and improve speed, efficiency, and reliability.
• Work on data processing and sensor pipelines connecting software with hardware.
• Analyze memory usage, resource management, and system performance.
• Contribute across multiple software stack layers to study component impacts.
• Help develop build systems, libraries, tooling, and system configuration.
• Debug complex software and system-level issues.
• Collaborate with firmware, electrical engineering, and other teams on cross-functional problems.
• Own a meaningful technical project from exploration to testing and evaluation.
