Job description

Summary:

Investigates and evaluates risk exposures for property and casualty insurance, with a strong emphasis on agricultural and rural risks. Performs audits and on-site inspections of insured properties and operations. In accordance with underwriting rules and guidelines, provides recommendations to accept, modify, limit, or decline coverage to support a safe and profitable distribution of risk.

Loss Control Representative: Exercises initiative and independent judgment in performing assigned duties.

Senior Loss Control Representative: Works under limited supervision and exercises a high degree of initiative and independent judgment performing the duties of the position.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Reviews insurance applications and supporting documentation. Conducts on-site inspections of agricultural, residential and commercial properties, including buildings, outbuildings, mobile homes, vehicles, equipment, and land, to evaluate condition, valuation, liability exposures, and hazards.
  • Recommends corrective actions, underwriting endorsements, and rating factors to promote safe and profitable risk selection.
  • Measures and documents dwellings, buildings, and property; prepares photographs and scaled drawings as required.
  • Inspects and documents agricultural operations, including but not limited to confined animal feeding operations and agri-tourism exposures.
  • Inspects and documents electrical systems, including breaker panels and fuse boxes.
  • Inspects and documents heating systems, including electric space heaters, wood-burning systems, and fireplaces.
  • Completes solid fuel and wood heat applications, dwelling cost guides, and other inspection-related forms.
  • Prepares clear, detailed written reports identifying findings and recommended corrective actions for unsafe or hazardous conditions.
  • Coordinates inspection appointments with agents and customers.
  • Collaborates with customers and internal staff to resolve coverage, underwriting, or rating issues.
  • Communicates with agents to support compliance with underwriting guidelines, safety standards, codes, and regulations, and to promote quality risk selection.
  • Develops and maintains weekly inspection itineraries and accurate inspection logs.
  • Provides consistent, professional customer service and maintains strong working relationships with field staff and Home Office personnel.
  • Participates in company and industry training, seminars, and conferences to maintain current knowledge of underwriting regulations and loss control standards.
  • Audits agent field files to ensure completeness and required documentation.
  • Trains agents and employees on loss control procedures and inspection requirements; responds to underwriting-related inquiries.
  • Conducts safety and loss prevention presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Researches emerging construction techniques, materials, and agricultural practices and updates procedures accordingly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

In addition to the job duties listed above for Loss Control Representative

  • Trains and mentors less experienced personnel in safety concepts, agricultural risk exposures, and risk management techniques.
  • Collaborates with management on examination processes, audits, and regulatory procedures.
  • Develops loss control analysis tools and reporting materials to enhance underwriting decision-making.
What You Bring:

Bachelor's degree in agriculture, insurance, business, engineering, safety, loss control, or a related field; additional relevant experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis. Preferred completion of the Associate in Insurance (AINS) designation.

Senior Loss Control Representative: Bachelor's degree in agriculture, insurance, business, engineering, safety, loss control, or a related field and a minimum of four years of related experience; additional experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis. Preferred professional designations include ARM, AU, or completion of three or more CPCU courses.

Has a proven ability to perform at the Loss Control Representative level.

Travel Requirement:

60% travel, mostly within the state of Missouri
