Job summary

AJ Transport in South Boston, VA, is seeking an experienced Logistics Manager (Dispatch Manager) to lead the Dispatch department and keep our fleet moving. You will supervise the daily work of the Dispatch team, ensure loads are scheduled efficiently, and coordinate with Drivers, Operations, Maintenance, Safety, and Customers to meet deadlines.

You'll drive fleet efficiency, build strong customer relationships, and identify opportunities to improve dispatch processes while maintaining DOT,

Qualifications

• Supervisory experience in transportation or dispatch required.
• Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and Hours-of-Service regulations.
• Experience coordinating with drivers, operations, safety, maintenance, and customers.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Hands-on leadership style and accountability.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, coach, and support the daily work of the Dispatch team.
• Ensure loads are scheduled and dispatched efficiently while meeting customer expectations.
• Monitor dispatcher workload, productivity, and performance.
• Step in on complex customer issues, driver concerns, and operational challenges.
• Coordinate daily operations with Drivers, Operations, Maintenance, and Safety.
• Build strong customer relationships through responsive communication and quick problem resolution.
• Maximize equipment utilization and driver productivity while minimizing empty miles and downtime.
• Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and company policies.
• Identify opportunities to improve dispatch efficiency and customer service.
• Support hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, and performance reviews for Dispatch staff.
• Prepare and present operational performance reports to management.
• Jump into dispatch duties directly when operational needs call for it.
• Take on other duties as assigned.

Lead the Team That Keeps Our Fleet Moving

AJ Transport is looking for an experienced Logistics Manager to take the reins of our Dispatch Department. If you're a natural leader who knows how to balance people, priorities, and performance — while keeping customers happy and freight on schedule — we want you on our team.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you'll lead the Dispatch team, drive fleet efficiency, and be a key connector between Operations, Safety, Maintenance, Sales, and Customers. This is a hands‑on leadership role for someone who wants real ownership over how a dispatch operation runs.

What You Bring

• High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred
• 3–5+ years of transportation dispatch experience, including supervisory experience — required
• Bonus points for experience managing dispatch of dump trucks, dump trailers, pneumatic bulk trailers, tank trailers, or hazmat transportation
• Solid knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and Hours-of-Service regulations
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and computer skills
• Sharp decision‑making, problem‑solving, and conflict‑resolution abilities
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast‑paced transportation environment
• A genuine commitment to safety, customer service, and continuous improvement

Bonus Experience We'd Love to See

• Background supporting asphalt plants, power generation facilities, concrete plants, bulk LP facilities, or construction/industrial operations
• Familiarity with transporting liquid asphalt, LP gas, butane, or other hazardous materials
