Job summary

Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a part-time digitization assistant to scan and transcribe manuscript logbooks with care for fragile materials.

This grant-funded role runs about 17 hours per week for roughly one year. You will evaluate documents for scan readiness, operate an overhead book scanner, ensure image quality, perform basic post-processing, and upload files to the digital access repository.

Qualifications

• Scanning experience preferred.
• Familiarity with archival handling and digitization best practices.
• Proficient with file management and common software.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
• Ability to handle repetitive tasks.

Job description

Please note that this is a grant funded position and will be scheduled for 17 hours a week for approximately one year.

• Evaluate documents for scan readiness and flag any that require repair or protective enclosure


• Safely handle potentially fragile materials in accordance with established preservation standards


• Operate an overhead book scanner to digitize manuscript logbooks safely and accurately


• Ensure consistent image quality and perform basic post-processing tasks (cropping, rotation, file naming, file moving)


• Transcribe scanned logbooks using machine-assisted tools


• Upload completed files to a digital access repository


• Track daily scanning progress and update project logs and metadata as needed


• Perform basic maintenance on scanning equipment and report issues promptly

Requirements

• Scanning experience preferred


• Familiarity with archival handling and digitization best practices a plus


• Proficiency with file management, spreadsheet and image software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, IrfanView , Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel)


• Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and meet productivity targets
