Job summary

Norfolk Southern is hiring for a Locomotive Electrician Trainee in the Chicago area. The role involves wiring, maintaining, repairing and inspecting locomotive electrical systems, while adhering to safety and federal standards.

The program includes classroom and field training over ~7 weeks, with lodging provided and travel reimbursement per union agreement. Union membership required; shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays are expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment in locomotives.
• Read electrical prints and test circuits using diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging and wheel-slip issues.
• Work with voltages up to 1200 and amperages up to 2400.
• Operate locomotives within shop limits as required.
