Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking a Locomotive Electrician Trainee to join a seniority-based union role in its locomotive electrical program. You’ll train in electrical systems and advance toward journeyman status with structured classroom and field training.

The eight-week program covers safety orientation, craft training, lodging, and travel reimbursement. Shifts include nights, weekends, and holidays; union membership is required within 60 days of establishing seniority.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment.
• Measure, cut, thread, bend, and assemble connections to control panels and junction boxes.
• Read electrical prints, test circuits, and connections using diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging issues and sensor problems.
• Operate voltages up to 1200 and amperages up to 2400.
• Inspect components for wear and defects.
• Interpret test instrument indicators and data.
• Perform safety-related duties and wear protective gear.
• May move locomotives within shop limits.
