Job summary

Shelter Insurance Companies is seeking a Litigation Counsel to lead claims litigation activities and case strategy across designated Shelter states. You will direct managers, supervise outside attorneys, and train claims-handling staff to ensure compliance with state law.

This role requires a law degree and strong knowledge of litigation, insurance law, and policy terms, with 1–3 years of trial or claims experience and on-the-job training to master contracts and jurisdictions.

Qualifications

• Law degree and thorough knowledge of litigation, claims-litigation precedents, and insurance law.
• 1–3 years trial or legal claims experience, plus 6–12 months on-the-job training to learn contracts, procedures, and jurisdictional practices.

Responsibilities

• Manage and direct claims litigation activities and case strategy for designated Shelter states.
• Direct Managers and Supervisors in claims handling, investigation, and communication on complex, high-exposure branch claims.
• Manage, supervise outside attorneys; direct and train claims-handling activities per state law.
• Establish, train, and direct overall claims-handling protocol consistent with state law.
• Research law to explain impact on claims handling, procedures, and policy changes proposals.
• Counsel other Shelter departments on claims, coverage, and legal issues.
• Direct and prepare appropriate training for schools, eLearning, and Branches.
