Job summary

Shelter Insurance Companies is seeking a Litigation Counsel to manage and direct claims litigation activities across designated Shelter states. You will supervise outside attorneys, train staff, and ensure compliance with state law while guiding case strategy and complex high-exposure claims.

The role requires a law degree, practical experience in litigation, and the ability to build strong relationships with defense attorneys, adjusters, claimants, and Shelter teams.

Qualifications

• Law degree and thorough knowledge of litigation, claims-litigation precedents, insurance law, and policy terms.
• Excellent communication, organizational, analytical and decision-making skills.
• Ability to manage changing schedules, work with others, and prioritize time-sensitive work.
• Ability to develop critical relationships with defense attorneys, adjusters, claimants and their attorneys, judges, and Shelter management.
• 1-3 years trial or legal claims experience, plus 6-12 months on-the-job training in insurance contracts and procedures.
• Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.

Responsibilities

• Manage and direct claims litigation activities and case strategy for designated Shelter states.
• Direct Managers and Supervisors in claims handling, investigation, and communication on complex, high-exposure branch claims.
• Supervise outside attorneys and direct training for schools, eLearning, and Branches.
• Establish and direct overall claims-handling protocol per state law.
