Washington, DC | Hybrid - 4 Days On-Site/1 Day Remote
An established Am Law 100 law firm is seeking an experienced Commercial Litigation Legal Assistant to support a busy litigation practice in its Washington, DC office.
The ideal candidate will have strong litigation experience, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced legal environment. This individual will work closely with attorneys on case and matter management, court filings, discovery, document preparation, calendaring, and other litigation-related administrative needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive administrative and legal support to attorneys within the commercial litigation practice.
- Prepare, edit, proofread, format, and finalize legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, motions, and other case materials.
- Retrieve, organize, and maintain pleadings, court documents, discovery materials, and correspondence within the firm's document management system.
- Monitor litigation deadlines, court dates, and critical case-related deliverables.
- Assist with drafting and preparing motions, responses, pleadings, notices, and other filings under attorney direction.
- Prepare and coordinate court filings and service of documents in state and federal matters.
- Prepare and organize documents, exhibits, and materials for hearings, depositions, mediations, and trials.
- Assist with discovery, including preparing and organizing interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admission, deposition notices, subpoenas, and related materials.
- Coordinate service of process, court reporters, deposition logistics, and other litigation-related arrangements.
- Conduct basic research regarding court rules, filing requirements, deadlines, and judge-specific procedures as needed.
- Assist with new matter and client intake, conflicts processes, engagement documentation, and matter setup.
- Maintain accurate and organized electronic files and ensure proper document naming, filing, and version control.
- Assist with time entry, billing, prebills, expense processing, and other matter-related administrative tasks.
- Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, courts, vendors, and other internal and external contacts.
- Track assignments and follow up on outstanding items to ensure deadlines and priorities are met.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive client and matter information.
- Utilize legal technology and document management systems to support efficient case and matter workflows.
- Provide additional litigation support as needed.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of legal assistant or litigation support experience within a law firm environment.
- Prior commercial litigation experience is required.
- Strong knowledge of litigation procedures, legal terminology, pleadings, discovery, and court filing processes.
- Experience supporting matters in state and federal courts.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PDF/document management tools.
- Experience with iManage or a comparable document management system preferred.
- Familiarity with PACER and state/federal electronic filing systems preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a collaborative legal team.
- Strong judgment, professionalism, discretion, and follow-through are essential.
- Bachelor's degree and relevant professional experience preferred.
Compensation & Schedule
- Salary: Up to $120,000, depending on experience
