Job description

The Underwriting Manager will lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the General Casualty underwriting team, driving profitable growth while developing and managing a high-performing group of underwriters. The incumbent will serve as the primary underwriting authority for the team, set standards for risk selection and portfolio quality, and own key wholesale broker relationships. This role is responsible for aligning team performance with company underwriting strategy, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, and acting as a senior liaison across Underwriting, Actuarial, Reinsurance, Claims, and Legal functions.

Essential Duties & Functions
  • Lead, manage, and develop a team of underwriters, providing coaching, performance feedback, and technical mentorship.
  • Oversee the underwriting of new and renewal General Casualty business, ensuring consistent application of company guidelines and sound risk judgment across the team.
  • Own and manage a complex portfolio of wholesale broker relationships, driving production, profitability, and long-term partnership growth.
  • Set and monitor team underwriting authority levels; review and approve referrals and non-standard risks as required.
  • Analyze portfolio performance metrics and loss trends; develop and implement corrective action plans to address underperforming segments.
  • Partner with leadership to shape underwriting appetite, refine guidelines, and develop product offerings in response to market conditions.
  • Lead or participate in broker visits and market presentations to support territory growth and relationship development.
  • Leverage AI-powered underwriting tools and data analytics to enhance risk evaluation, improve team decision‑making efficiency, and identify emerging portfolio trends.
  • Define and maintain key dashboards tracking production, losses, and risk metrics; present findings and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with Actuarial, Claims, Legal, and Reinsurance to inform underwriting strategy and resolve complex risk issues.
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, and retention of underwriting talent in partnership with the People Team.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading an underwriting team, with a track record of developing talent and driving team performance.
  • Deep technical expertise in General Casualty lines with the ability to set standards and serve as the team's underwriting authority.
  • Strong analytical and portfolio management skills; able to interpret loss data, identify trends, and translate findings into actionable strategy.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain senior‑level wholesale broker relationships and grow a profitable book of business.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and influencing skills; able to operate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to balance production goals and underwriting discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to underwriting guideline development, product refinement, or appetite strategy.
  • Proficiency in underwriting systems, technology, and AI‑driven analytics tools; advanced Microsoft Office skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment and manage competing priorities across a team.
Required Education And Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 10+ years of underwriting experience in the Property/Casualty industry, with a focus on commercial casualty lines.
  • Prior management or team lead experience in an underwriting capacity.
  • Demonstrated track record of independently managing and growing a profitable book of business.
Preferred Education And Experience
  • Previous specialty or E&S market underwriting experience.
  • Experience with wholesale/surplus lines distribution.
  • Insurance coursework or continuing education in casualty lines.
Additional Eligibility Requirements (Certificates, Licenses, Required/Preferred)
  • AINS, CPCU, AU, or other insurance designations strongly preferred.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full‑time position. Expected days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position may require extended hours and occasional weekend work based on business need.

Travel

As needed to develop and maintain relationships with wholesale partners and support team market activity.
