Job summary

RLI Insurance Company in Chicago is seeking an Underwriting Support professional to assist commercial property underwriting by creating policy documents, maintaining electronic files, ordering inspections and audits, and supporting underwriters with renewal transactions.

You will review certificates, resolve discrepancies with reinsurers, produce underwriting and production reports, and assist with data for front-end systems; experience with commercial property insurance preferred.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma; associate degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of related experience for consideration.
  • Experience in commercial property insurance preferred.
  • Or equivalent level of education and experience.

Position Purpose

Support Commercial Property underwriting by creating policy documents, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, ordering inspections and premium audits, maintaining electronic underwriting files, soliciting renewal transactions, providing basic operational support for the product line’s underwriters. Review insurance certificates, resolve discrepancies with reinsurers, provide operations, production and underwriting reports, work with producers, audit work of others, and, in some cases, act on behalf of Underwriting with given authority.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
  • Create policy documents that bind the insurance transaction under the underwriter’s direction.
  • Ensure the statistical coding and policy issuance complies with regulatory requirements for each transaction.
  • Order inspections, premium audits, and loss runs as required.
  • Maintain electronic underwriting files.
  • Solicit renewal transactions.
  • When necessary, re‑format data for import into the front‑end system.
  • Provide basic operational support for the product line’s underwriters.
  • As requested, develop underwriting information from the internet and other data sources.
  • Review facultative insurance certificates to ensure terms match the reinsurer’s expectations.
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies with facultative reinsurers.
  • Produce operational, production, and underwriting reports using front‑end systems and/or Business Objects.
  • Contact producers to determine appropriate courses of action.
  • Assist with User Acceptance Testing of systematic changes.
  • Audit the work of others.
  • May be given authority to review/approve endorsements, analyze risks, review terms and conditions of underlying policies, and review inspections of risks on behalf of Underwriting.
Education & Experience
  • Typically requires a high school diploma; associate degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of related experience for consideration.
  • Or equivalent level of education and experience.
  • Experience in commercial property insurance preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
  • Ability to follow operations procedures as outlined by supervisor or manager.
  • Ability to meet processing deadlines with minimal error.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, both long‑ and short‑term, simultaneously.
  • Ability to use database software, Windows operating systems, computer network environments and printers to process insurance policy changes.
  • Accurate data entry.
  • Superior Excel skills for peer reviewing formulas, formatting, and cleansing of large spreadsheets.
Compensation Overview

The base salary range is provided below and may be adjusted in the future based on location, experience and role specialization.

Base Pay Range

$22,010 – $29,290 per annum.
