About The Department

Social Sciences Computing Services provides the Social Sciences Division with direct support for research, administrative and teaching technologies and services.

Job Summary

The job provides routine technical support in the configuration, installation, maintenance and upgrading of computer systems hardware and software. Applies experience and skills to administer and maintain security of operating systems. Restores files or systems by designing, writing and implementing backup procedures. Provides operational support for the University's information systems and peripheral equipment, such as application servers, database servers, web servers, desktops, printers and storage devices. Under moderate supervision, performs recovery procedures, scheduling and backups, and monitors batch processes.

The Linux Computer Operations Technician will be responsible for routine maintenance and monitoring of existing UNIX, Linux and simple cloud applications and system architecture. Ensures operation and security of all servers and networks. Configures, installs, maintains and upgrades applications and hardware for the organization's infrastructure and for end-user devices.

Responsibilities

  • Under moderate guidance, conducts routine technical procedures and tasks related to the controls of SSCS’s Unix and Cloud-based ancillary and peripheral computers and systems, while assisting senior team members in the administration of larger systems.
  • Identifies and resolves routine issues, escalates more advanced issues to senior team members.
  • Maintains backups of workstations and servers.
  • Ensures integrity by implementing appropriate routine software and hardware solutions. Conducts routine hardware and software audits of workstations, backing up all information.
  • Performs routine software installations.
  • Participates actively in team-meetings and communicates effectively with team members.
  • Actively develops skills and knowledge to build expertise with SSCS’s Cloud, UNIX [RHEL, Ubuntu, AWS] platforms, and Storage systems.
  • Maintains all supporting documentation for comprehensive operating system, hardware and software configuration. Monitors primary responses for information technology related security incidents and violations. Keeps current with new security and network monitoring technologies, applicable laws, and regulations.
  • Under moderate supervision, conducts routine technical processes and procedures related to the monitoring and controls of mini or mainframe computers and peripheral equipment, such as printers, tape, and disk drives by operating the central console or on-line terminals.
  • Identifies and resolves regularly-occurring deficiencies, escalating atypical issues to more senior team members.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
