Job summary

American Electric Power in Woodlawn, VA is seeking an apprentice line mechanic to assist with installation, maintenance and inspection of transmission and distribution facilities. You will learn to operate line equipment and progress from basic support duties to hands-on tasks under supervision.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and be prepared to obtain a CDL permit within 60 days. CAST testing and safety training are required components of the role.

Qualifications

• No experience required. Line work experience or line school education is preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Employee shall obtain appropriate licensing as required by federal and/or state law prior to the end of the designated probationary period. Must acquire CDL beginners permit within 60 days.
• Successful completion of CAST selection test is required; a physical abilities assessment is also required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the assembly, installation, maintenance, removal and inspection of overhead and underground facilities under supervision.
• Demonstrate ability to perform ground person duties under supervision and assist with loading, unloading and rigging.
• Progress to operating company equipment and climbing structures as skill level dictates under supervision.
• Inspect and maintain tools, equipment and work area, and report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
