Job summary

Akron Area YMCA is hiring a part-time lifeguard at the Barberton location to ensure a safe swimming environment. The role requires active pool surveillance, adherence to YMCA safety policies, and timely responses to emergencies, with certification in lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED, and emergency oxygen administration.

The position emphasizes readiness, documentation, and coordination with supervisors for substitutes and maintenance.

Qualifications

• Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent
• Minimum age 15
• Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
• Child abuse prevention training within 90 days of hire date
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area at all times
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately
• Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner
• Maintains safety rules and guidelines for pool and aquatic area
• Remains calm and objective under pressure
• Reports to work on time and rescue ready at shift start
• Secures a qualified substitute well in advance and notifies Supervisor
• Maintains accurate records as required by YMCA and health department
• Performs equipment checks and ensures available equipment
• Checks the pool for hazardous conditions on arrival
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding and takes action
• Complete all other jobs as assigned
