Job summary

Austin YMCA is seeking a dedicated lifeguard to supervise pool areas, enforce safety rules, and respond to emergencies. You will help members learn skills, support aquatic programs, and maintain a clean, welcoming environment.

The role emphasizes safety, customer service, and teamwork within our YMCA community in Austin. Candidates should be at least 18 and hold current lifeguard and CPR/AED certifications, with prior lifeguard or swim instruction experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Hold a current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration.
• Previous lifeguard, swim instructor, competitive swimmer, or swim team participant preferred.
• Strong swimming ability, rescue skills, and physical stamina.
• Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and respond effectively in emergency situations.
• Ability to recognize hazards, enforce pool rules, and maintain a safe aquatic environment.

Responsibilities

• Proactively monitor pool areas and enforce safety rules to prevent accidents.
• React to emergencies with appropriate first aid and CPR and ensure positive outcomes.
• Identify and resolve potential hazards immediately.
• Regularly inspect pool equipment and facilities and report issues.
• Inform members about pool rules and safety procedures.
• Help with swim lessons and aquatics programs.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization in the pool area and locker rooms.
• Attend trainings and staff meetings to stay updated on safety procedures.
• Demonstrate YMCA values in all interactions and foster a culture of respect and community.
• Serve as an ambassador for the organization and share the Y's work and culture.
• Complete other duties as assigned.
