Job Summary

Under the direction of management, the employee performs duties related to the activities and operation of the City-owned aquatic centers. Responsible for ensuring the safety of all guests by preventing accidents and responding promptly in emergency situations. This is a part-time/seasonal position, working approximately 30 - 40 hours per week. Evenings, weekends, and some holidays are required.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Ensures staff and guest safety by supervising activities in and around the pool and aquatic facility to prevent accidents and maintain a safe environment.
  2. Enforces pool rules and regulations to ensure the safety of all guests.
  3. Conducts regular surveillance of the pool area and responds immediately to any emergency situations.
  4. Performs water rescues and administers First Aid or CPR as necessary.
  5. Provides assistance and guidance to guests regarding pool safety and procedures.
  6. Performs routine maintenance tasks related to pool cleanliness.
  7. Monitors equipment/property and reports any defects to management in a timely manner.
  8. Collaborates with other lifeguards and staff to ensure efficient operations and safety protocols.
  9. Completes incident and accident reports accurately and promptly.
  10. Participates in all preseason orientations and weekly training sessions/drills to maintain readiness for emergencies as required to maintain license.
  11. Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
  12. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate.
  13. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  14. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skill in performing water rescue techniques, CPR, and First Aid procedures on all persons. Preseason and ongoing training are provided.
  • Proficient swimming skills and ability to perform rescues confidently and effectively.
  • Excellent observational skills and ability to remain attentive and focused for extended periods.
  • Ability to stay calm and make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to perform rescues and remain alert during shifts.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at applying the City of Hurst’s Code of Ideals in all interpersonal relations with city staff and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time to operate standard office equipment, including computer keyboard, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, and printer.

Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum age 15.
  • Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but not required.
  • Ellis & Associates ILTP license required or ability to obtain before June. Certification and training will be provided upon employment.
  • Must have regular and punctual attendance, reliable transportation, flexibility to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and some holidays, and respond to emergency situations during non-scheduled work hours.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

This job entails moderate physical labor, which requires strength and agility. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to swim and perform rescue operations.
  • Ability to hear and respond to guests in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to sit/stand for extended periods of time while observing pool guests.
  • Ability to reach, lift and/or carry persons while performing rescue operations. Weight varies up to the maximum for the individual rescuer.

Majority of work is performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and sun. Work performed is subject to chemical hazards.

Work may be subject to time pressures, emergency situations, frequent changes to tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, working alone 50% or more of the time, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and dealing with difficult persons.
