SUMMARY OF POSITION

General Supervision is provided by the Pool Manager. Ensure patron safety and protect lives through preventing injuries, enforcing facility rules and regulations, recognizing and responding to emergencies, administering first aid or CPR in an emergency, and informing other lifeguards and facility staff when more help or equipment is needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
  • Enforce facility rules and regulations and educate patrons about them.
  • Recognize and respond effectively to all emergencies.
  • Administer first aid or CPR in an emergency, and if trained, give oxygen and use an automated external defibrillator if needed.
  • Utilize decision making abilities such as using judgment to identify and rescue actively drowning swimmer, deciding the best care to be administered for sudden illnesses such as diabetic emergencies, cardiac arrest situations, etc.
  • Participate in weekly in-service training.
  • Help maintain cleanliness of facility.
  • Provide quality customer service.
  • Complete records and reports including time sheets, incident reports, cleaning routines, etc.
  • Work rotating schedule to include evenings and weekends.
  • Comply with all written City policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum age - 15.
  • Must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate, Current CPR and First Aid Certificates or the ability to obtain upon employment.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate with the public especially children.
  • Must be available for rotating schedules that will include weekends and evenings.
  • Must have a valid drivers license; may travel to other facilities to fill staffing needs or attend meetings.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

There are certain physical demands required to perform the essential functions of this job, including:

  • Ability to attend all training and meetings as required
  • Present a clean, well-groomed appearance
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long period of time
  • Must be alert at all times to activities going on in and around the pool
  • Occasionally must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 50lbs.
  • May frequently be required to bend and kneel
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of a lifeguard as outlined by the American Red Cross
  • Special vision requirements include: close vision; distance vision; peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

There will be exposure to certain environmental conditions in performing the essential functions of this job, to include:

  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Wet or humid non-weather conditions.
  • Fumes or airborne particles.
  • Outdoor weather conditions and Extreme heat (non-weather).
