Job summary

New Start SLS in California is seeking Life Skills Coaches to support adults with developmental disabilities at home and in the community. Each shift provides meaningful opportunities to help individuals live more independently and make their own choices.

Duties include daily living skills, budgeting, meal planning, transportation, appointments, and social activities. IHSS shifts offer on-site and flexible part-time hours with competitive pay.

Qualifications

• Speak, read, and write English.
• Be at least 18 years old.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Minimum 1 year of experience supporting individuals with disabilities.
• Complete and maintain a DOJ LiveScan background check.
• Provide evidence of a negative TB test and a current physical (within the last year).
• Provide CPR and First Aid certification from an in-person or hybrid course.
• IHSS provider registered with IHSS Placer County to work IHSS shifts.

Responsibilities

• Assist individuals with learning daily skills and activities.
• Support with menu planning, grocery shopping, and budgeting.
• Help with cooking, cleaning, and using public transportation.
• Assist with appointments, volunteering, and social leisure activities.
• Document daily progress and adhere to medication administration processes.
• Provide transportation support using personal vehicle where required.

• We are helping an individual looking for part-time IHSS evening support covering two days total between Friday through Monday in Auburn. We are also looking for on-call SLS support staff to join our team in both Auburn and Grass Valley.

ABOUT THE ROLE - LIFE SKILLS COACH:

Supportive Living Services is a program designed to provide in-home and community-based assistance to adults with developmental disabilities who live in their own homes and want to make their own choices. At New Start SLS, we believe that individuals thrive when they make their own choices about where they live, work, and how they spend their time and resources. By taking control of the choices that control their lives, those with developmental disabilities can better direct their own future.

Through patience, guidance, encouragement and Person-Centered Planning, we support the individuals we serve to develop the confidence and skills they need to make meaningful choices, as well as experience fulfillment and greater independence. Each shift offers new experiences and the reward of knowing you’ve made a difference.

In this position, a few examples of the type of work you will be doing may include assisting the individual with learning daily skills and activities, menu planning, grocery shopping, cooking, budgeting, cleaning, using public transportation, making and attending appointments, volunteering, and participating in social leisure activities. Other duties include, but are not limited to:

• Staff will be sensitive to the ethnic, lifestyle, and cultural diversity of our consumers and their circle of support. Staff will encourage, and help achieve consumer success.
• Provide in-home and community based assistance to consumers according to individual service programs set up by Alta California Regional Center and New Start SLS.
• Reporting of issues and concerns regarding consumers to New Start Case Manager.
• Attending in-service training sessions when offered and complete required assigned continued education monthly.
• Documenting of daily charting notes and adhere to Medication Administration processes.
• Some individuals we serve may require staff transportation support. To be eligible to drive clients, staff must be eligible and willing to use their personal vehicle during employment. Eligibility requires documentation review and maintaining copies of valid CA driver’s license, current insurance, and clean DMV record with the office.
• Grass Valley Required: Some of the individuals we support use electric or manual wheelchairs, receive assistance with adaptive equipment for transfer, and may require personal care assistance (ex: toileting, bathing, brushing teeth, wound assistance).
• SLS Pay rates: Grass Valley on-call $23.00 per hour. Auburn SLS is $20.00 per hour.

QUALIFICATIONS + PRE-REQUISITES:

• Must be able to speak, read, and write English.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
• Must have a minimum of 1 year of experience supporting individuals with disabilities. Must also have a punctual and reliable work ethic with a positive attitude, empathy and the ability to support others.
• Complete and Maintain a Satisfactory DOJ LiveScan Background Check.
• Provide evidence of a Negative TB Test and a Clear Physical from within the last year.
• Provide proof of current CPR and First Aid Certification from an in-person or hybrid based course.
• IHSS: Must be a registered/certified IHSS provider with IHSS Placer County to work IHSS shifts in this location. IHSS pay rate determined by IHSS Placer County.
