Job description

Nature of Work:

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Supported Living Services (SLS) Instructors to provide direct support, training, and coaching to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including those with medical, behavioral, or mobility-related needs. This role requires a strong commitment to person-centered practices, fostering independence, and empowering individuals to thrive in their homes and communities.

Key Responsibilities:

As an SLS Instructor, you will be entrusted with a variety of duties to ensure the safety, independence, and overall quality of life for the individuals served. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Independent Living Skills & Daily Support:
    • Assisting individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, and medication reminders (per training and protocols).
    • Teaching and reinforcing skills in money management, cooking, cleaning, transportation, and other essential life areas.
    • Monitoring and documenting individuals’ progress, health, and well-being, promptly reporting changes or concerns.
  • Household Management:
    • Supporting clients in maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable home environment.
    • Assisting with meal planning, grocery shopping, and ensuring safe food preparation.
    • Encouraging responsibility and participation in household routines.
  • Community Integration & Social Engagement:
    • Assisting individuals in accessing medical appointments, recreational outings, educational opportunities, and community events.
    • Encouraging meaningful social engagement and inclusion within the community.
    • Supporting clients in employment-related or volunteer activities when applicable.
  • Administrative & Compliance:
    • Accurately documenting supports provided, progress notes, and incident reports in compliance with Title 17 and agency policy.
    • Participating in required staff meetings, ongoing trainings, and professional development.
    • Advocating for the rights, dignity, and self-determination of individuals with disabilities.
Qualifications:

Working Knowledge of:

  • Best practices in person-centered support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Strategies for teaching and reinforcing independent living skills.
  • Standard housekeeping and safe food preparation practices.

Ability to Gain Basic Knowledge (Training Provided):

  • Title 17 regulations and Regional Center service requirements.
  • Techniques for assisting with personal care and hygiene.
  • Proper documentation and recordkeeping procedures.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to build trusting and supportive relationships with individuals and families.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capacity to provide coaching, encouragement, and respectful redirection.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in challenging situations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of six (6) months experience in SLS direct support OR one (1) year in a related field.
  • Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, insurance, and current DMV record (for positions requiring driving).
  • Current Health Screening and TB Clearance.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification. Ability to pass a DOJ/FBI criminal background check.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or holidays as required by participant needs.
