Job summary

The State of West Virginia seeks a Lieutenant-level Correctional Officer to oversee shift or unit operations within a correctional facility. You will enforce rules, supervise staff, and ensure safety for inmates, staff, and the public.

Requirements include a high school diploma and at least five years of related experience, with substitution options through college coursework. Training and fitness tests are required; overtime and travel may occur.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a standard high school or the equivalent.
• Five years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as a correctional officer, probation/parole officer, any US Military Service, police officer or in criminal justice or related field.
• Substitution: coursework from regionally accredited college/university may substitute for experience at 1 year per 30 hours of study.

Responsibilities

• Supervise shift or unit in a correctional facility.
• Enforce rules, regulations, and state law for control of residents and public safety.
• Plan, review, and direct the work of subordinates; perform related admin duties.
