Job description

This Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position is located at the Grand Island VA Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. This LPN works under the direction of an RN as a member of a Primary Care team, providing basic and specialized nursing care for adult and geriatric patients with a variety of physical, mental, behavioral, or psychological needs.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

To be minimally qualified for appointment as an LPN or LVN (licensed practical or vocational nurse) in VHA, applicants must meet the following education and licensure requirements:

• Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. See 'Education' section for additional requirements and exceptions.
• Licensure: Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The applicant's grade level will be determined based on their experience and qualifications, ranging from GS-03 to GS-06. Human Resources will assess and recommend the appropriate grade based on your application.

To be considered for GS-05 and GS-06 levels, your application must demonstrate the following KSAs:

GS-03

None beyond basic requirements.

GS-04

May qualify based on:

• Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN.
• OR graduation from an approved school with one year of nursing care experience in a medical setting.
• OR graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.

GS-05

Must have at least 1 year of experience at GS-04 level demonstrating:

• Knowledge of practical nursing care for diverse patient problems.
• Ability to educate patients and families about disease processes and treatments.
• Teamwork and customer service skills.
• Competence in preparing and administering medications and documenting care.
• Recognition of emergency situations and response capabilities.
• Awareness of equipment safety and supply management.

GS-06

Requires at least 1 additional year of experience at GS-05 demonstrating:

• Proficiency in providing care to varied patient populations.
• Judgment in planning and executing patient care.
• Recognition and response to urgent care needs.
• Knowledge of patient behavior and effective communication.
• Support for diagnostic procedures and training of less experienced staff.
• Commitment to ongoing education and practice improvement.
