Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina's MUSC Community Physicians seeks a Licensed Practical Nurse to join the Night shift at the Horry County Detention Center. The role delivers patient/family centered care, assists with examinations, screenings, and routine nursing duties under correctional safety standards.

You will perform triage, document findings, monitor vital signs, manage supplies, and work with correctional officers to ensure secure patient movement.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited Practical Nurse program.
• Licensed as an LPN in South Carolina or a compact state.
• CPR certification (AHA BLS or Red Cross Professional Rescuer) required.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient/family centered care and support, following facility rules.
• Assist medical staff with examinations, screenings, and procedures.
• Document findings and monitor vital signs; perform triage and in-person checks.
• Coordinate with correctional officers to ensure safe patient transport within the facility.

Job Description

Night / 12-hour shifts

6:00pm - 6:00am

Provides patient/family centered care, acting as partner and adviser, assisting patients to optimally manage their health care while respecting individual needs, values, and preferences. Applies critical reasoning and astute clinical judgment to expedite appropriate care and treatment. Uses critical thinking in clinical problem-solving relative to scope of practice, knowledge, competency, and experience.

Assists medical staff with preparation, examination, and procedures, including interviewing/screening patients, documenting findings, and obtaining vital signs. Performs telephone and in‑person screenings. Participates in documentation and reporting responsibilities, prioritizes patient calls, and cleans/stocks exam rooms.

Correctional-specific responsibilities include:

• Performing nursing care for inmates/detainees in accordance with facility rules and security procedures.
• Conducting medical intake screenings when needed during booking or admission.
• Responding to medical emergencies inside the secure perimeter.
• Working with correctional officers to ensure safe movement of inmates to and from the medical unit.
• Maintaining control of sharps, medications, and medical equipment per correctional safety standards.
• Providing care in environments that may include locked cells, exam rooms, segregation units, and intake/booking areas.
• Maintaining required professionalism, boundaries, and awareness at all times.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Graduate from an accredited Practical Nurse program. Licensed as an LPN in South Carolina or a compact state.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:

A current CPR card is required (AHA BLS or Red Cross Professional Rescuer)
