Job summary

UMass Amherst is seeking a Utility Plant Operator (Licensed Pipefitter) to operate, maintain, and repair the campus steam, water, and sewer distribution systems and related equipment in Amherst.

The role requires a Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Pipefitter license, welding ability, and the capacity to work in confined spaces and outdoors, with on-call and overtime as needed. This is a full-time, on-site position emphasizing safety and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Pipefitter license is required.
  • Massachusetts Water Distribution Grade 2 license must be obtained within the stated timeframe.
  • Massachusetts Combination Certified Backflow Prevention/Surveyor certification required within 12 months.
  • Must complete steam distribution training within 12 months.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, maintains, and repairs campus steam, condensate, water and sewer distribution systems and related equipment.
  • Performs valve, pipe insulation, and underground distribution system work.
  • Welds steel pipe and structural steel to UMA standards as required.
  • Interprets maps, work orders, and utility diagrams.
  • Ensures safety procedures and proper lockout/tagout practices.
