Job summary

UMass Amherst is seeking a Plumber and Steamfitter I (2nd shift) to install, repair, alter and maintain fluid transmission and HVAC systems across campus facilities in Amherst. The role involves asbestos-related work, safety compliance, and collaboration with Control Technicians to ensure system integrity.

The position requires a Massachusetts Journeyman license, plumbing/steamfitting knowledge, and the ability to read plans, manage time and supervise helpers as needed.

Qualifications

  • Massachusetts Plumbing and Gasfitting License/Journeyman must be current and valid.
  • Reading and interpreting plans, sketches and oral instructions is required.
  • Possible six-month window to obtain Asbestos Abatement Worker, Pump, and Metasys certificates.
  • Must possess a current Class D driver's license.
  • Experience as a journeyman plumber is expected.
  • Ability to provide off-shift coverage as needed.
  • Knowledge of safety, preventive maintenance, and HVAC system operation.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair plumbing, steam, HVAC, and related systems.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and initiate repairs for plumbing, steam, sanitary, and mechanical systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and calibrate building HVAC systems.
  • Assist Engineering staff in drawings review and system upgrades.
  • Drive a campus vehicle to various locations.
  • Supervise and instruct lower grade staff on plumbing tasks.
