Job summary

California State University, Stanislaus in Turlock is seeking a Library Student Assistant for late nights and weekend shifts in the University Library. This hourly position supports staff by assisting at the Circulation Desk, shelving, and helping patrons with basic library services.

Applicants must be enrolled students and available to work evenings or weekends; excellent customer service, reliability, and the ability to follow directions are essential.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate students must be registered in six or more Fall/Spring units.
• Post-baccalaureate graduate students must be registered in four Fall/Spring units.
• Must be available to work until 12am and/or weekends.
• Must be responsible/dependable and report to scheduled shifts on time.
• Demonstrated ability to use a computer; type; alphabetize; follow directions from supervisor.
• Must be able to interact with library users and remain alert at service desks.

Responsibilities

• Assist users at the Circulation Desk, in the book stacks, and in study areas.
• Answer directional and library service-related questions.
• Refer questions to librarians or staff when appropriate.
• Assist library staff in monitoring and reporting issues throughout the library.
• Retrieve returned materials from indoor and outdoor book drops.
• Shelve all types of library materials.
• Perform shelf-reading functions.
• Use the computerized library system to check materials in and out.
• Assist with opening and closing of library.
• Some outreach tabling activities may be requested on occasion.
• Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

• The Student Assistant plays an important role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and other library patrons. This is an excellent opportunity to develop valuable customer service, communication, teamwork, and organizational skills while contributing to a welcoming and student-centered library environment.
