Delta College is seeking a Library student assistant to deliver excellent service to students, staff and community members. You will check materials in/out, shelve items, assist with printing and technology, and help with displays and special projects.

Applicants should be dependable, detail-oriented, and enrolled in at least six Delta credits. Availability for some opening/closing and Sunday shifts is preferred, with training provided.

Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY

Library student assistants play a key role in library operations. They provide outstanding customer service to students, faculty, staff and community members both in person and on the phone. They staff the library circulation and research desks. Students in this role should enjoy working with people, be comfortable with technology, strive to be dependable, approachable, customer focused and open to learning new skills and responsibilities.

Students in this role must have availability during the following library hours and should be able to commit to some opening, closing or Sunday shifts.

Library Fall/Winter Hours
  • Monday-Thursday 7:30am-8:00pm
  • Friday 7:30am-4:00pm
  • Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm

Preference will be given to students with Sunday availability.

What You’ll Get to Do

    • After learning the basics of your position, you will have the opportunity to develop your critical thinking skills by deciding when to ask questions and when to make decisions based on what you already know.
    • You will develop critical thinking as you help students and decide when to refer questions to staff.

Supervisory Style

All library staff provide training, supervision, direction and assessment of student assistants. We expect you to be able to complete regular tasks independently once trained. You will typically be working with a library staff member during your shift. We are always happy to answer questions. We will check in during shifts to ensure assigned tasks are being completed.

We will provide directions for tasks or projects that have specific requirements and ask for feedback on learning styles.

  • Be prepared to complete a brief book shelving activity (no prior experience needed)
Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of office equipment including copiers, printers, computer software and hardware, etc.
  • Moderate troubleshooting capabilities, or have the willingness to learn.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Dependable
  • Must be enrolled at Delta College and registered for a minimum of six (6) credit hours.
  • Participate in initial orientation sessions, ongoing trainings, and staff meetings.
  • A willingness to acquire a general understanding of the College policies and practices to better serve fellow students, campus departments, and visiting community members.
  • Commitment to uphold the office’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and have the ability to quickly learn new platforms.
  • Workstudy preferred but not necessary.
