Job Summary/Basic Function
The Assistant supports the Library’s mission to provide a welcomingand friendly environment for all students, staff, and communitymembers; materials and services that promote learning, instruction,research, self-awareness, and cultural awareness; and job trainingfor work-study students. This position assists in the day-to-dayoperation of the library, basic technology support, and planningand coordination of material displays and programs. The Assistantcontributes to ensuring that the Bay College Library is a place ofbelonging on campus and is a responsive and vital academic resourcefor students, faculty, staff and community members. This positionis part-time, 20 hours per week. Work schedule may include one/twoevening(s) per week during the fall and winter semesters
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in a related field.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population(including, staff, faculty, students, and public) in a courteousand professional manner.
- Excellent customer service skills and a commitment toclient/patron-centered services.
- A high degree of collaboration, flexibility, problem-solvingskills, and critical thinking skills.
- Willingness to learn to use and troubleshoot a variety ofcomputer programs and technologies.
- Outstanding listening, interpersonal, time-management, andorganizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and with attention todetail.
- Experience using MS Office: Excel, Access, Word,Publisher.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some knowledge or experience in a library or using librarysoftware and online library information systems is preferred.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude, maturity, initiative andintegrity with a professional image contributing to the success ofthe College.
- Ability to maintain working relationships with internal andexternal customers.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Identifies needed action without continual direction.
- Knowledge of and commitment to the College’s mission.

Job Duties
- Acts as the initial customer service contact for the Library. Isseated at the Library’s main desk and greets and directs walk-intraffic, answers the main phone line, and responds to emails.
- Assists in the day-to-day library operations, including opening andclosing of the library.
- Assists at front desk with circulation functions such as thecharging/discharging of materials, renewal of materials,registration of new patrons, filling holds and interlibrary loanrequests, creation of student and staff I.D. cards, and assistingpatrons with computers, photocopiers, and accessibilitydevices.
- Performs clerical duties, such as sorting mail, filing,photocopying, word processing, and mailing out letters. Keeps upregular communication with supervisors regarding changes, and seekstreamline processes where appropriate.
- Promotes research of evidence from trusted academic sources on awide array of topics, without judgement.
- Explains reference sources and how to use them with patrons.
- Assists College Librarian in planning themes, selecting materials,and designing layouts for library material and virtual displays onthe Escanaba and Iron Mountain Campuses
- Performs Collection Maintenance, including sorting, shelving, shelfreading, and shifting of material. Assists in carrying outcollection weeding projects.
- Assists in cataloging and processing library materials.
- Assists College Librarian in planning, implementing, and promotinglibrary programs and events.
- Assists College Librarian in supervising and coaching work-studystudents; assigns tasks.
- Maintains records of overdue and billed items.
- Maintains records of print collection of serial magazines andnewspapers.
- Monitors library cash drawer.
- Exercises sound judgment in interpreting established librarypolicies and procedures when dealing with patrons.
- Participates and seeks professional development and growth.
- Maintain filing system for library accounts, inventory, andequipment.
- Maintain proper function of office equipment.
- May participate in a campus committee as a liaison to thelibrary.
- Any other duties as assigned.
