Job summary

Illinois is seeking a dedicated library assistant to help patrons with accounts, registrations, and program sign-ups. The role involves outreach to the community, promoting services, and assisting with daily operations in a fast-paced library environment.

Responsibilities include processing loans, answering questions, guiding users on self-checks, handling registrations, and supporting events and room bookings. The ideal candidate has strong computer skills, customer focus, and reliability.

Qualifications

• Two years of college preferred.
• Two years library experience or two years retail customer service experience.
• Available to work evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Understands and carries out the Library’s policies and procedures.
• Assists patrons with all matters related to their Library accounts and answers public questions.
• May fulfill interlibrary loan requests and report statistics.
• Registers public meeting room bookings, maintains schedule and public calendar, reports statistics.
• Selects Quick Pick magazine collection and maintains display.
• Registers and processes special library cards for businesses, nonresidents, and other users.
• Instructs patrons in the use of self-checks, automated materials handler, copier, and catalog.
• Registers patrons for library cards, programs, and other services like voter registration and tax appointments.
• Checks materials in/out, renews items, sorts and routes materials.
• Answers directional and procedural questions; refers patrons to staff when needed.
• Promotes Library card signup at schools and community events.
• Reconciles patron accounts and processes payments for damaged/lost items.
• Prepares daily cash deposit and cash register drawer for opening.
• Accepts donations for the Friends of the Library and processes book sale purchases.
• Maintains holds area, Quick Pick collections, and new Video Game collection; shelving and straightening.
• Compiles statistical data.
• May attend meetings, workshops, and conferences; may prep weekly desk schedule.
• Performs a variety of clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.
